UGH

I'm stuck in a rut when it come to Roleplaying games lately. I'm in a great 7th Seas game and I have a really fun Hunters Game just taking off now, but i feel like im missing something.
I have a bunch of ideas for games but no systems for them to fit. I've got ideas of systems but lack the ambition to design.

I really want to play a magic low fantasy game. I used to be able to rely on D&D for my fantasy fall back but 4e won't work. Maybe Pathfinder when it gets produced. Sure i can use the savage worlds system but im not a big fan of that system. I would like to use the story teller system since i hate the idea of d&d levels. UGH. I imagine a dark valley, stone castles with very little glass, cold and dreary climate, an evil shamanistic/animalistic antagonist people, a large gate that closes the valley from the rest of world with no concievable way around, just yet.

I want to craft the mobster game I've got rolling around in my noggin. I've got 1 solid mechanic system, and 1 wishy washy system but i don't have enough reference for the fluff. I don't know enough about the mob to give the game justice.

I look through all the RPG books I have and none really capture me like they used to. There is no spark like before. That thing that snags you and makes you want to play immediately just isnt there. Before 4e came out i was very anxious to play, I loved the idea. Then when it came out that all fell flat. Combat took way to long, its very hard to just pick up and play without prep work. I don't always want to play a minis game and 4e is all minis. 7th seas fills a niche but thats not what im looking for right now. I love l5r but im a bit stale on samurai and rokugan. I thought i would get that buzz when i picked up the shadowrun stuff but that fell flat too. Hunters has my interest but not the same ooomph as i would like. Call of Cthulhu is aways great but its tough to run a sustained campaign when your players expect to die or go insane each session.
I need a new game.
even an old game but a new one to me.
I want birthright converted already to pathfinder.
I want a roleplaying game meshed with a wargame with minis
I want a fun fast paced zombie game.
I want Jay or B or Tommy to move to az to join my gaming group here.
I want a straight up dungeon crawl with easy combat.
I want to be inspired to play again.
I want to be part of a sustained Vampire Requiem game.
I want it all and i want it now

I have a goal.
By this time next year i would like to be 250lbs or close.

I've grown fat, lazy, and out of shape. At 31 years old, I'm now worried about heartattacks, strokes, and whatever else might kill me off before my party called life is over.

Went to Jiu Jitsu class last night. and im really sore. really really sore. I'm exhausted but its a good pain.

i need to be able to go through the entire class without gassing too much.

The GrandMaster has passed on.

At age 95, Helio Gracie Passed away.

Helio Gracie one of the creators of Gracie Jiu Jitsu died Wednesday the 28th of January.
I never got to meet the Grand Master though I did know lots of folks who did. Everyone said he was an insanely nice guy with a disarming smile. Who would have thought that up until 3 weeks ago he was rolling with some students and his family?

If legacy's are the signs of immortality, he has achieved it.

Below is copied from Mad Brew Labs

http://www.madbrewlabs.com/index.php/2009/01/26/if-rpgs-were-religions/

A warning: If you can’t laugh at stereotypes of religions, you should close your browser now, otherwise please enjoy (and if you can come up with some funny comparisons yourself, put them in the comments!).

Blackmoor + Chainmail - Paganism

Not much is known about roleplaying during this era, as recorded history was just in its youth. Many strange things were attempted and many of the rituals involved esoteric adaptations of wargaming rules.

OD&D - Judaism

From the chaos of early roleplaying developments arises the Original Dungeons & Dragons. During this time, the great leader of the people freed from Wargames, TSR, brought down the holy writ from the mountain near Lake Geneva that provided the basic rules of Dungeons & Dragons. These rules, created by Gygax and dictated by Arneson, were recorded on great stone tablets and placed in the ark of the Boxed Set.

This old and venerable roleplaying game has influenced or been incorporated into many modern roleplaying games today. Today, the majority of OD&D’s adherents have been relocated to a special location set aside for them after the horrors of the Great D&D Holocaust during the 80s.

AD&D - Early Christianity

Advanced Dungeons & Dragons took much the dogma of OD&D, its spiritual predecessor but changed much of the fundamental doctrine. The messiah of AD&D, the son of Gygax is d20 and its message, “Believe in me and you shall be saved, from all those charts.” This was very much a time of trial and error as the roleplaying game tried to define itself.

There are still many followers of this early rules system. Not only do the adherents of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons believe that THAC0 is best method of determining initiative, they are likely to burn you at the stake for disagreeing.

DL 5th Age - Satanism

During the period of AD&D, a new diceless form of roleplaying developed within one of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons’ sects, Dragonlance. The 5th Age, or SAGA roleplaying game attempts to lure the unwary with promises of decadent pleasure, but by the time the roleplayer figures out his mistake, he has lost his soul (or at least a part of his life he shall never recover).

Because of the horrors of the Fifth Age, many gamers think that any diceless roleplaying game is the spawn of Satan.

D&D 3rd Edition - Roman Catholic Church

When a new pontiff, christened Wizards of the Coast, took up the pastoral staff of D&D, he declared a reformation of the holy writ of Dungeons & Dragons. Thus after a lengthy conclave and much deliberation, the 3rd Edition of Dungeons & Dragons was born. In response to the pivotal document known as the Open Gaming License sent shockwaves through the industry as it was the harbinger of great (and horrible) things to come.

Many publishers took the Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game and reinterpreted it in an image that they felt was more appealing or closer to the gospel truth. These OGL roleplaying games are many and varied in number and have taken a large slice of the market share.

Dungeons & Dragons was further refined by the 3.5 council and many religious orders and spiritual movements were formed. The Greyhawk, Forgotten Realms, and Dragonlance orders were revised and the new Eberron movement was established.

d20 OGL - Protestantism

After the posting of Ryan Dancey’s Open Gaming License, many publishers decided to make their own versions of Dungeons & Dragons. These games come and go, but there have been several OGL games take root and flourish. Some well established games include Pathfinder, True20, and Mutants & Masterminds.

OGL games, their publishers, and their followers will argue that their interpretation is the best and hardly see eye to eye, even when two games are so similar it is hard to distinguish between the two.

OSRIC - Reconstructionist Judaism

In recent years, there has been a revival movement of the Original Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game. The adherents of this movement wish to reinterpret the rules for modern use instead of trying to maintain the decaying tomes of OD&D and the copyright and trademark infringement problems associated with them. There are even some OGL rules that attempt to hearken back to ancient days of OD&D, such as Castles & Crusades. Many of the followers of these games refer to their preferred style of gaming as “old school.”

D&D 4e - Latter Day Saints

Theoretically, the 4th Edition of Dungeons & Dragons, or simply 4e, is supposed to be based upon Dungeons & Dragons, but it changes and adds so many rules that it doesn’t feel like the old rules at all. 4e also adheres to the proclamations of their current prophet, Hasbro, who claims to speak with god.

Many roleplayers suspect that 4e would probably be nice, if only the followers of the older Dungeons & Dragons wouldn’t discriminate against them so much for following it.

Storytelling System - Islam

Though younger than the Original Dungeons & Dragons, the Storytelling System quickly found its place in the world and claimed many converts to its rules system that claims to advocate a narrative style of roleplaying that places “story” as the most important pillar of faith.

Many think that the game heralded by the prophet White Wolf is really nothing more than a refuge for power gaming zealots that are quickly angered when their motives are called into question. The extremists of this game, Mind’s Eye LARPers, are known to threaten infidels with death and participate in terror tactics by having their most disgusting members wear horrible costumes that may invoke the gag reflex of innocent gamers.

Rifts - Scientology

There are many roleplayers who claim to follow it, but you’ve always suspected that it’s a huge and elaborate prank that got out of control. Not only is the game mystifying and broken to outsiders, to truly get the big picture, Rifters are driven to spend obscene amounts of money to obtain supplements with special rules and settings.

Call of Cthulhu - Voodoo

It is said that merely dabbling in this game can drive roleplayers mad or corrupt their souls so that no other system can bring joy. The Keepers that preside over Call of Cthulhu games easily make zombies out of their players, as the rules are made to destroy their characters.

Savage Worlds - Humanism

It’s simple, unrestrictive, and all you need to follow it is common sense. Many of the followers of Savage Worlds claim to feel relieved from the entire burden imposed by other games, and that they have rediscovered the joy of roleplaying.

FUDGE - Taoism

It is so different from other games that many roleplayers don’t understand how anyone can use FUDGE to produce anything fun and meaningful. Its followers believe that it’s the true path to wisdom, but that wisdom is beyond the grasp of most mortals.

GURPS - Hinduism

Followers of GURPS endorse its ability to adapt to multiple genres and its ability to allow complete customization of character. Even though GURPS does not claim the largest market share, it keeps reincarnating itself into new editions and its followers hope to eventually reach Gaming Nirvana.

Rolemaster - Zoroastrianism

Almost as old as the Original Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game (I know Zoroastrianism is actually older than Judaism, but I couldn’t think of anything better), Rolemaster is all but extinct today. Known for its attempt to simulate every variable, Rolemaster can be a tedious game to play.

Today, what little adherents of Rolemaster that exist are usually of the Middle-Earth Roleplaying faction and are content to spend their lives cross referencing hundreds of charts in order to attain perfect simulationism.

Nobilis - Zen Buddhism

There are no dice. There are no random elements. The entire universe of roleplaying is there at your reach - if only you are enlightened enough to grasp it. Nobilis has few attributes and much of its mechanics are hidden within its holy text. Some gamers say that it’s not a game at all; others say that it’s the only game that truly makes sense.

Disclaimer

This article was inspired (and heavily borrows from) by If Programming Languages Were Religions and is meant to be humorous, but no doubt there will be zealots that will want to spew flames and scholars that want to correct my interpretations. So have at it.

Wonderment

Like every child, my anticipation for christmas was always great. The days leading up to that day were never short enough, I couldnt get the time to fly by fast enough. My mom in the kitchen baking up a zillion cookies, my dad shoveling snow, these were signs that the season was upon us.
As i've gotten older the time doesnt go by slow enough so i can enjoy my time with my friends and family. I'm 2000 miles away from mom's kitchen and I live in the desert where snow just doesnt fall.
In years past I would board the giant flying tylenol and head "home". 3 days, 7 days what ever i could get. This year is different. I couldnt get the time off for work and shannon got her 3 weeks off and has left for NEPA so i sit alone in my home with my furry family members. My brother lives about 15 miles away so I will get to see him this year for christmas which will be really nice. AND my parents flew out to see both of us for the holidays. Blessedly they are staying with my brother ;).
Every christmas eve at Midnight, my family parties, our friends and family are invited, lots of good food is eaten, silly games are played and its a time to catch up with those you havent seen all year. Its a tradition to meet at the Waszkiewicz house. This year the house will sit dark. We will be partying at my brother's home but I wonder will anyone knock on the door at midnight this year in Exeter? Like the lighthouse in the fog it's always there, always on. Except this year.

I didnt get the "christmas spirit" until this morning. A video posted by Wick triggered that. Thank you man. The little things that bring back memories, I just wish shan was here to spend the holiday with me.

Merry Christmas
Happy Hannakah
Happy Kwanzaa
May His Noodled Appendage touch yours,
Happy Yule
May you friends and Family have a great time together and the best future possible.

Thanks for reading.
dan

War Heroes

I know i've posted this stuff before but sometimes i get a bug to tell the stories again.

Being 30 years old, growing up in PA, it was common for little boys to play war. It was the 80's, We thought the russians were the bad guys. When people died in our little games they would pop right up saying " NO WAY I WASN"T SHOT!" Toy guns, camo pajamas. We daydreamed of being soldiers.
As we grew older, some of us let go of that dream realizing it was not cut out for them either through fear or through some other reason. Others joined the service to be heroes. My friends they joined the military because they were broke. Louie, Chico, Al, and Weeksy. They all served their time. Chico finished out first, Louie fallowed up, Weeksy went to Korea and bounced around the midwest. Al eventually went to Iraq. His MP Unit guarded "high profile" prisoners. Al never told me who he watched over but his unit was the ones that guarded Saddam Hussein. Thats pretty damn important. Granted there were times I thought Al was a straight up asshole. He was doing something that i could not do. He did mature and we do get along.
Then you have Brandon LaBar. Sgt Brandon LaBar. B is one of my best friends. I met him wearing the same shirt as me in HS and i found out he played D&D. We were inseperable from that day forward. Same Sports, same music. After i graduated HS I didn't go to the Beach like everyone else I headed north to Lake Placid to see Brandon for a month (he graduated a year ahead of me). Once he got finished with school, and after my time at Drexel University, I moved in with him in this huge apartment in Plymouth PA. We were there about a year, he was working odd jobs and money was tough. On the 15th of August, B told me i would need to get a new roommate. He was joining the Army and was leaving on the 30th. The bastard gave me 15 days notice. I couldnt find anyone so i went back to live with mom and dad. B went in for carpentry/mason if i recall and did some time in the reserves. He found out that if he went to Cavalry, he could go full time and off he went. I would touch base with him and we would catch up since he bounced from training to training. This Hyperactive Sugar Rush of a straightesge hardcore kid was trained to be a sniper. Holy shit what. This guy can't sit still for 5 minutes. well I guess somethings change. Certified sniper.
While B was in the army another buddy of ours joined up as well Sgt. Douglas Bull. Dougie Bull was one of the guys we used to play basketball with and was a general joker and goof. He could make anyone smile and was a skinny little shit. Tall but skinny. He went in because he said it was the right thing for him to do. God bless his soul. Doug and B were good friends and with both being the army made that bond even stronger. It is something i will never understand. I can not fathom what these guys see or do. Sure i could watch movies, see it on the news, read about it online or in the paper but i can never truly know. I can appreciate every serviceman and woman that dons that uniform though.
Brandon Reupped and was shipped to Iraq, Dougie Bull the same.
Mike Lloyd and I went to Ga to see Brandon off. It was tough seeing my best friend getting ready to go to war. He was Sgt LaBar, and his guys looked up to him. He commanded their respect, you could see it in how they spoke with him and how they spoke of him.
He spends his time in the middle east. He's never really spoken about his time there. Sometimes he talks about the dirt and just general shit. Part of me is begging to ask about everything but i remain silent. I wasnt there I wouldnt understand.
Oct 2 2005, a fellow sniper Sgt Ryan Coffield was shot in the neck on a rooftop in some Iraqi town i can't pronounce. Brandon did what he does. He stopped the bleeding enough that Ryan could get off the rooftop and get to help. http://www.thecitizen.com/?q=node/2138 Brandon saved that guy's life. I never want to hear if he shot anyone, or even if he has any confirmed kills. He saved another soldier's life. And then went back to work. Back to being a soldier. I never learned this from B. I found out all this online. Google. He never said a word. I asked my friends if they knew. Not a damn thing. So i finally asked Brandon. He muttered something about yeah he did and that Ryan's alive and doing well. and that was it. nothing more. Humility, long ago i would have laughed to say B was humble. But he is. Recently I've had the honor to meeting Ryan. He made sure I knew B saved his life. I've only gotten to talk to Ryan over Xbox live and he's now on my friends list just like B and we whoop up on some Zombie ass the 3 of us on Left 4 Dead. I beam with pride saying that yes i know Sgt Brandon LaBar. I do know that B and Ryan keep that day special. As far as i know B recieved no special medal or citation. I don't think he would have accepted it anyway.

This past july, I did have to unfortunate circumstance of having to inform my friends that Sgt Doug Bull had been killed. I live in AZ and every morning i read the news online. When ever the NEPA news sites say a "local soldier killed" I read them, in fear that it would be either B or Dougie that would that soldier. It came true. The first thing i did was call Brandon at 7 am phoenix time. It had to be one of the hardest things I've ever said. He was just silent. Asked where i found out and thanked me. Apparently Dougie decided to switch up carriers as well. He went into the engineers just a year back. He also just recieved a tattoo that read "All gave some Some gave all" on his forearms. He died by an improvised explosive device. This guy opted to go back to Afghanistan to help protect his brothers in arms by looking for bombs and mines. MotherFucker if he didnt find one! http://www.kdhnews.com/news/story.aspx?s=26558&q=douglas+bull
That story is classic Dougie. He is a war hero. As are all the men and women that didn't make it back.
Brandon is still in the Army but he's stateside, thank god. and i get to talk with him more now that ever before thanks to xbox live. I do that because i appreciate the simple fact that I can. The War didn't take one of my best friends away from me like it has to so many other people who have lost loved ones. I cry thinking about the fathers, mothers, children and friends that have to bury their loved ones. I understand their fear, I understand their sadness. I'm grateful for everymoment I get to spend with my family and friends.

For my gaming friends. Louie, Chico, Weeksie, Al, and Brandon, made up my gaming group. It was filled out Donny Rose, and Tommy P. 3 of us didnt enlist. And I always have an open seat for my guys. Even Al, he's not a dick anymore.
Louie was always the Cleric
Chico always played a Big Fighter
Weeksie was a Mage/thief
Al was a Thief
Brandon was the Ranger/Wizard
Donny was what ever was more powerful
Tommy was the Thief
I was the DM

Even though we are scattered to the winds, anytime any one of them wants to play they are ALWAYS invited. anytime. anywhere.

now if that damn WotC virtual tabletop will get done i can get the band back together

Pearl Harbor Attacked 67 years ago today

Wow I almost forgot.

67 years ago today one the most brillant military moves/blunders occurred. It is a day that will live in infamy forever. The ambush on Pearl Harbor awoke the sleeping giant of the US and pushed us into the Second Great War.

Soon those brave men and women will be all gone. Many of their tales have been recalled in books, and movies. If you know someone that fought in WWII take some time to ask them about the war if you can. Even if its not about the war ask them about themselves when they were younger, ask them where they were when different things in history happened. They are a direct conduit to the past. Don't let their stories be forgotten. Take their advice and just listen. And thank them for their time. That is more valuable to them that you can imagine now in your own life. Because there will be a time when you will be old and want to tell stories and give advice. Our time here is very short but those stories can last forever. never stop telling them, and never forget your own.

On Jeff Grubb's most recent blog post, he notes that during a TSR layoff a long time back that Tracy Hickman was set to get the axe. and this was right before Dragonlance was to be released.
WOW
If it were not for those beautiful paintings by Larry Elmore, and the tales of the Heroes I probably would have never gotten into the hobby.
I probably would never have met some of the great people I've become friends with, I wouldn't have made some of my best friends. I've spent more than half my life staring at the pages of various tomes unlocking their secrets so my imaginary worlds can meld with others. I would have wasted thousands of dollars on other wastes of time.
If not for roleplaying games I would never have met Mike Smith and binged drank and smoked and tripped. And if not for roleplaying games i would never have kicked all that early and focusing my addictive personality into roleplaying games. I wouldnt be sober today.
Wow.

I owe alot to Bruce Nesmith who stepped up and got canned, now i enjoy his fruits of labor by dumping tons of time into oblivion and Fallout 3....

/rant
A few weeks back i was involved in a conversation about politics. I decided to wait a few so i could calm down. Because something was said that really set me off. One of the conversation participants said "gays should seek rehabilitation". I WAS FLOORED so floored that I couldnt respond civilly so I kept my mouth shut. And this came from someone that is definately educated and a "scientist" to boot. I clinched my teeth so tight i was afraid i would break them. I am trying to maintain that I can have a friendship with someone that has different beliefs that I have and I should respect their decisions and politics even though they differ from mine.
The conversation was concerning Prop 102 AZ and Prop 8 CA and the same sex prop in FL. The topic changed afterward and we left it behind. That comment still is in my ear. I can still hear him say " Gays should seek rehabiliation" WTF Thats like saying its a disease or a disorder. I'm still in shock. Luckily my contact with him was limited last time we gamed. I kept the conversation to the game and didnt veer since i was afraid i was going to rip his head off.

I self reflected and realized that Sexual Politics are my main reasons for making political decisions. HOW FUCKED UP IS THAT!!!
I would be willing to forgo a Good candidate that could bring prosperity simply because the Pro Life tag.
I hope for a day that all this gets put aside and we can worry about other shit that matters. like the economy of foreign policy, welfare, and infrastructure.

/end rant

Show me by Telling me

After listening to the Yog Sothoth podcast of Horror on the Orient Express, my interest in radio shows has been peaked.

I can't understand how radio dramas disappeared. I'm listening to the original Orson Welles War of the Worlds. My imagination is bubbling over. Those directors were GENIUS.
I can see the pilots flying over Jersey, the scientists putting on their gas masks.

Now if i can take something away about how they show you the scene with simple words. They created tension with words, and lack of words. The planned silences are spooky and intense.

I've got a bunch of Vincent Price stories as well...

All the call of Cthulhu characters are complete.YAY! bring on the insanity!
We have an Bootlegger/rum runner, a extremely rich flapper w/ split personalities, a law librarian that has an issue w/ dead things (or things staying dead), and an Undertaker that performs seances to contact the recently deceased (hey he's got a 10% success rate!)

So off to arkham and dunwich our investigators go.

Hunter the Vigil. 2 characters down, now i have to get some pregen's for the other players. We've got a member of the Cheiron Group thats tagging and collecting specimens, and a ex professor turned horror comic writer. Now i think for the story I'm going to make a small Police Task Force that calls upon the knowledge of the former prof, and the Cheiron group guy will have important information concerning the current threat.
the Task Force: I'm thinking they would be a small organized crime task force investigating the Russian Mafia, staking out an operation that could lead to something else.
The influence for the story would be from story "The Flesh Trade" which is the fiction in the main Hunters book, combined with the Clive Barker Film " Midnight Meat Train".
